About Me

NINA MARIE TUROVSKIY is a costume designer and illustrator based on the East Coast. She graduated from Emerson College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Design and Production with a concentration in Costume Design.

Nina first fell in love with costume design reading Anna Karenina. Reading the novel, she came across the description of Anna's black gown at the ball when she first sees Vronsky. Growing up surrounded by Russian culture, she couldn't help but think of the black frames traditionally used for portraits of the deceased. It was the first time she understood that clothing could carry meaning beyond aesthetics.

Nina's work is rooted in the idea that costume is a language. Before a line is spoken, clothing can establish a character's place in the world, hint at their relationships, reveal their aspirations, or expose the things they're trying to hide.​ She is especially drawn to historical stories, stories shaped by war, and works that ask difficult questions about society. Although she is an optimistic person by nature, her artistic voice has been shaped by the irony, nostalgia, and melancholy that run through so much of Russian literature. Growing up with Soviet films, Pushkin's fairy tales, the poetry of Yesenin, and the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, she learned that beauty and sorrow often exist together, and that even in the darkest moments there's room for humor. ​​
